This is the end of the first week of the Mandala CAL that I’ve committed to, hosted by Wink at A Creative Being using the pattern by CAROcreated design. I was a little intimidated by this pattern – it’s so beautiful and looks so intricate. But the pattern is really well written and has pictures for each row and step which has made it easier to jump in.
The first step of course is choosing the colors for the mandala. Because I figured my first attempt at this pattern would come with some starts and stops, I decided to choose the six colors from my existing stash. I love how Wink broke down the choosing of the colors. I hadn’t really processed the color selection that way, and ended up changing up my choice based on her recommendation. So here are the colors I’m using.
Then it was time to jump in and get started. This week, I got the first 7 (out of 31) rounds completed.
This looks so intricate and complicated, huh? If you can single crochet, double crochet, and front post treble crochet, you can do this! It also uses the needle join technique for finishing each round, which I’ve been wanting to try. The written instructions are very clear, but I had also seen this demonstrated in the video tutorial on Moogly (she calls it seamless finishing). And I’ve learned that seeing something demo’d on a video makes it so much easier to process the written instructions.
So…I’m off to a good start! The crochet-a-long is six weeks I think, so I’m well on my way to staying on track to having at least one of these done in that time. Wish me luck that it continues to come together!
