Wow! I just finished reading my 50th book THIS YEAR!
That was my “stretch” goal for myself this year. Last year I read 31, and initially set a goal of 36 books for 2012. That’s 3 books per month. Sounded totally ambitious – and then this summer I easily surpassed that! So I upped my goal to 50.
That’s almost 1 book per week.
4 years ago I read SIX books all year.
I’ve definitely slowed WAY down in my reading lately now that I’ve picked up some other craftier hobbies, but am still amazed at what I’ve read. Over the past few years, I’ve developed such a greater love of reading. But it also makes me a little bit of a “snob”. If a book doesn’t hook me in the first 25-50 pages, I’m done. Too many books on my to-read list to waste time on what’s not interesting me.
(Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? Yeah…got to page 100 and put it back down. I keep hearing I have to skip the first 150 pages and then it gets “good”. If you ask me that is terrible editing. If I can skip that much of a book without losing anything it should have been cut out all together.)
So what was my 50th book? Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
I have to admit I’ve been slow to get on the Harry Potter bandwagon (much to the dismay of my Houston book club) but I have really been enjoying them and think I’ll work on getting through as many more as I can this year. I started them because my then-7-year-old niece was starting them, and I wanted to be able to read along with her.
My to-read list is HUGE – like I-need-win-the-lottery-or-live-to-be-200-to-stand-a-chance huge. But…I’m always looking for the next must-read. So what’s yours?
What have you read that I absolutely MUST add to my list?
*In case you were wondering, I keep track of all my books on Goodreads, which offers a challenge each year and helps you keep track. I’m one of those people that loves to check off checkboxes, make lists just to mark them off, and loves a little competition even if it’s with myself. So the Goodreads challenge is a GREAT motivator for me.
