Growing up, we didn’t always have pets. And I’d NEVER had a cat. Remember, I was even afraid that I’d end up locked in a bathroom? Well right after getting married 12 years ago, our first cat Cali (short for Calistoga) allowed us to become her parents.
Cali is a sweet and feisty calico. She runs our house. She’s not a lap cat but when she wants attention, she’ll come up and plop onto the floor with her belly exposed and wants her belly rubbed. Until she doesn’t. Then she’ll bite and claw. But we’ve learned to sense the change in her demeanor and much less blood is lost these days.
About a year and a half later, we were at the pet store during an adoption event. And there was little Po (short for Portland). She is a tortoise shell calico…we’ve developed a particular fondness for calicos.
“Just hold her” my husband said. Yeah, I don’t pick up kitties any more…because I never put her down. She was only a few months old, and was separated from all her brothers and sisters that day. So she was terrified. I couldn’t tell if she was trembling or purring when I was holding her, but she was the tiniest ball of fur and melted my heart. She is definitely the baby in the family. Loves to cuddle up in bed and pokes you with her paw when she wants whatever you’re eating.
These two girls bring such calm love into our house. If we’re not feeling well, they know it and stick by our sides. And they always seem to know when I need a break from my computer and come to get some attention.
I can’t imagine life without them. We are definitely pet-parents (not just pet-owners)…and if you’re a pet-parent you know there is a huge difference. We’re not crazy cat people, but Cali and Po are our babies, and we love them.
What are you thankful for today?
By the way, did you see the cool new 30 Days of Thankfulness logo? Yeah, told you I had a great husband – and he’s also a very talented graphic designer.
